Review – Saint Arnold Oktoberfest

Well, well, well, it’s been quite a while since I posted to the blog.

Saint Arnold Oktoberfest

Saint Arnold Oktoberfest Microbrew

I’ve been way busy and just have not had the time to spend writing anything up. That changed today, because I had to come to Houston, TX, for some SQL training. I went to Whole Foods Market and got some beef stew, good bread, Icelandic butter, Italian Salami and English recipe corned beef, and had an excellent dinner at the hotel, and am now sitting at the company laptop typing up this post, enjoying an excellent micro-brew, Saint Arnold Oktoberfest.

Having grown up in Germany and having enjoyed some real German beer, I have to say that this micro-brew is just as good ans the genuine article from Deutschland. It is very smooth without too much carbonation, but not flat tasting like some American beers.

This definitely a beer I will buy again, and I will pick up a 6-pack before I head home on Friday. I got this at Kroger just across the parking lot from my hotel, and they had single bottles to be combined into a 6-pack so you can sample, so I have 5 more beers to go, and will try to review one per night.

So, for right now i will call this good, and wrap this up so I can watch and interesting show on the Discovery channel.

🙂

P.S.: I forgot to mention GoodBrews, a cool beer website I was told about by my co-worker, Dave.

Riparian Buffer Nations

Alright, I’m returning to a subject I am very interested in, and I have covered in a previous post.

Riparian buffers are a protective area along water features such as rivers, lakes and ponds that provide protection of the water habitat from off-site pollution, as well as providing habitat for plants and animals that require clean sources of water and food.

In the previous post I talked about acquiring property along riparian zones, and finding people to live on, and manage those riparian buffer lands.

Maybe we need to take this one step further, maybe those of us that believe in such an endeavor should form a union, gather as a folk, or nation, write a constitution, and take possession of riparian buffer lands through legal means, including using angel investors that believe in protecting the environment for future generations.

I could envision contiguous buffer zone lands to become small tribal areas, with multiple families assisting each other with the protection management of the riparian buffers they own and control, and these tribes could then cooperate in each bio-regional area to become riparian buffer nations comprising that area, yet all the bio-regional buffer zone nations could also be members of a continental and/or global Riparian Buffer Nation (RBN) that transcend nationalities and all cooperate for the common good of the planet.

I envision the tribes to conduct their business a lot like Native American Indians conduct their tribal business. Since these Indian tribes are very connected to their land(s), they already have very well established ways to manage and protect the land and a life style that is connected to the land, and water, and biota on the land, and we can learn a lot from them how to conduct ourselves.

So I propose to write a constitution that will focus on protecting the land that provides to us our own life in the form of clean water and uncontaminated food grown in a biota protecting manner so future generations are not stripped of their means of supporting their own and their children.

I would venture to say that a few, if not many Native American Indian tribes would welcome such a project, and help us new tribes by teaching us what it means to live in harmony with nature, and maybe become members of the greater Riparian Buffer Nation.

Being that I currently live in the USA, but was born in Germany, I have two diverse lifestyles I have lived. Both societies have their good and bad, and it is difficult not the be biased, but I can say the founders of the USA thought far ahead when they wrote the Constitution of the United States of America, so I will make an attempt at writing the first few article of constitution for the Riparian Buffer Nation (RBN) using the US Constitution as my model.

So, in future posts I will write up each article of constitution, and if anyone, especially lawyers would like to chime in and make suggestions and/or corrections, I will welcome comments to those posts and if I deem the comments valuable I will incorporate it into the applicable article.

Well, it is time to move on and get back to real life here in working land and time 😦

Is sugar toxic?

Well, this sux, I posted the article I just spent one hour writing, and it’s all gone… reason unknown. So, I will try to recreate what I typed but it will not be the same as what I had written before.

Even though I have not had much time to devote to blogging or such, I was able to spend some quiet time in the mornings reading a little on the (slow AT&T air card driven) internet. One such article is by Gary Taubes, titled Is sugar toxic? and published in 2011 on the NY Times web site.

Even though there hasn’t been much time to devote to the blog, I felt I needed to mention the article so you, my readers can read the article, as well, and let the information sink in.

Over the next few weeks I plan to making a series of posts addressing some of the subjects mentioned in the article, and if you have any interest in reading more on a certain subject, leave comments on this post or any subsequent ones, and if they relate to my own needs, I will further research them and publish my findings in additional posts.

What has prompted me to post this is that I am overweight, I have the typical male “beer gut” (also known these days as the “wheat gut”), but after reading Gary’s article in the NY Times, I’m think we should call it “fructose gut!”

I want to say that anything I mention here on my blog about my health, and what I am doing to repair my body and restore my health is only for me. It is not medical advice, and if you decide to try anything I do, please connsult your health practitioner first.

I am by no means a health professional, but I can read, and my comprehension level of these subjects is quite good, since I grew up eating healthy, semi-organic back in Germany during my childhood, and have only descended to my current health state after moving to North America, and especially these last 10 years or so.

So, talk to your doctor or nutritionist, but do your own research, don’t trust anyone, everyone has their own slant on health, and only you really know how you feel, even your health practitioner can only guess what you feel. It’s your body, take care of it and it will take care of you.

Kefir

A glass of kefir at a Polish cafe in London.

Yesterday I was talking about regaining some of my health; one of my current health issues is that I am lactose intolerant, or have become so over the last few years since I have come to the United States from Germany.

I think part of it is how they process milk and milk products here in the USA vs. Germany.

Well, when doing some research about lactose intolerance, I came across references to fermentation, and eventually Kefir.

I will not get into explaining what Kefir is, except its a fermented milk product. There is a very good Australian web site that has a wealth of information on Kefir, check out Dom’s Kefir in-site.

I plan on ordering some of his Kefir grains and give it a whirl.
