Ramblings for 2015.08.23

Once again it has been some time since my last post.

The wife and I have been very busy, but yesterday we managed to spend a little time at the Red Rooster Antique mall. We like to peruse the old stuff and while there I found three cookbooks that intrigued me. 20150823_084958

None of the cookbooks are antiques, but rather unusual. The first one I want to mention is the one on the right in the picture, “More-with-Less Cookbook.”

It is the only one of the three that has an ISBN number, and registered with the US Library of Congress, first published in 1976, last edition in 1980.

It is written by Mennonites who are concerned about taking care of the hungry. I plan on writing an extended review of the cookbook at a later date.

The second cookbook is the green one on the left, it is supposedly recipes for hypoglycemics. Titled “Nutritional Cookbook for Hypoglycemics” by the Hypoglycemic Club of the Quad Cities. Same with this one, I will write about later.

The last one, in the middle, may turn out to be a great find. The “McGaw Family Favorites” depicts the family, Samuel Pressely McGaw (b.1827), wife Elizabeth Porter Leslie (b.1832), and kids born from 1852 to 1871. The recipe collection was compiled in 1975, so I am not sure how authentic these recipes are, one for sure isn’t old as it calls for a packets of Lipton Onion Soup mix! However, some of the other recipes look like they could be from the mid to late 1800s.

I have bought a lot of older cookbooks over the last few months, and I plan on eventually blog about all of them, and I hope to make a few of the recipes one of these days, and I will try my best to make a post to this blog with pictures and what my families opinion is of each recipe.

Hope to get to cooking as soon as it cool of in my “neck of the burbs.”

Health – Heart Condition Update

So, Friday, 19 June 2015, I went in for my heart check.

They prepped me, rolled me in, and I was back out about 4 hours after I arrived at the heart hospital.

Turns out, I am fine, the suspected blockage is only a little plaque build-up, which according to the cardiologist is unusual for someone my age, and yet again he wants me to be on a statin, but I refused once more and stated renal (kidney) failure in my mom being my concern.

He didn’t argue with me but asked if I wanted to try a different statin than Crestor, but I said no thank you i want to try to manage this through diet and exercise.

So, my next step will be to get back with Dr. Lewis in Texas and have him schedule the LabCorp tests he wants to run so he can prescribe his protocol to take care of my issue.

Ramblings for 2014.12.27

Well, I have not posted a ramble for over a year, now, actually one year, one month, and three days to be exact!

Dec14 Snow

Snow on Dec 27, 2014

Anyway, I took a nice panorama shot of our back yard this morning. The weather forecasters had predicted around 1/2 inch (~12mm) of snow on lawns, but we ended up with around 3 inches (~7.6cm) of the white stuff instead, so I decided to capture it this morning, and it was just natural for me to change the blog banner since I seem to have a little time on my hands.

I have a pot of mulligan soup simmering, and I am getting ready to watch “The Net 2.0” on Crackle via my Roku 2.

Anyway, I need to start rambling a little more than I have been.

On to other things, I decided to review my blog posts, and one year ago I talked about the environment and drought in the south western part of the United States. Today, one year later, this drought persists, and in some ways is worse. One of the key stories is that California is running out of water, and some farmers have been cut off from water supplies to maintain their farm land via irrigation.

Could this spell the end of California’s reign on the nations vegetable supplier?

Whatever the future holds for us, we should try to grow more of our own food in our own yards, as well as seek our local farmers, ranchers, and suppliers, to reduce our dependence on a few isolated producers. This will also reduce our greenhouse emissions and create local jobs.

Well, I’m getting tired and it is getting to be time for bed, so I will get this posted.

Self-Improvement – New Start

Have you ever questioned the purpose of your life, or asked, “with everything that is going on in my life, why am I going on? Is there a future worth living for?”

Piggybacking on my last post about getting a new job and regaining about 50% of my previous income, and trying to find something to inspire me to get re-engaged in life, I remembered a cool video I got from someone that was narrated by Earl Nightingale.

So I searched for any videos narrated by him, and among the list I found this particular video:

At the end of the video is a list of 12 points to remember, and I will try to go into each of those points as a separate post, but here is the list:

  1. Explore the work you are currently engaged in
  2. Realize that your own pasture is green – and unlimited
  3. The way you go about your job makes it good or bad
  4. Let yourself grow – avoid self-limitation
  5. Start preparing yourself for opportunities – NOW
  6. Put your imagination to work on ways of improving on what you are doing now
  7. Learn all you can about your job, your company and your industry
  8. There is no limit to your growth potential
  9. Our economy needs and will reward the uncommon person who participates in its growth
  10. Begin to build your library of reference material on your company, industry, your job and people skills
  11. Set aside an hour a day for study and research
  12. Remember the story of the acres of diamonds

I will not make Point 11 into a separate post, as this post you are reading serves as the post about setting aside an hour per day for research and learning.

I had originally thought about finding a short inspirational video so I could spend as little time as possible on this, but it turned out watching the 10 minute video in its entirety was the best choice I could have made, and it prompted me to spend that hour researching, learning, and writing up this blog post.

I want to touch briefly on a few other items that are tangentially associated with this post.

Recently I have been interested in finding mild climates to live in, and one place I found intriguing is Ecuador, specifically Cotacachi, as I described in a previous post. It is located in a valley at quite some altitude and has temperatures that range in the 45-72F (6-22C) range, placing it into the perfect temperature range for me and the wife. We both share this range as an overlap. She can handle, and prefers it colder, and I prefer temps in the 50-80F range, but this is about the most perfect place I can think of. So I was hunting for more information about living abroad and specifically living in Ecuador… in the process I found Blogger Abroad, a blog of a Canadian family living in the south of Ecuador where it is quite a bit warmer, but the culture is similar.

As it happens, he and his wife blog to make a living, and because of the reduced cost of living in Ecuador if you eat on the economy, you can make it on the income made online. Mind you, Bryan also blogs for About.com, so I imagine they make decent money between all their income streams, as he describes on his blog’s Start Here page. One of the things he writes about is Affiliate Marketing, and Amazon being one of the first and oldest affiliate marketers around. So I jumped in head first and signed up for an Amazon Affiliate account.

Even though I don’t plan on making any huge sums of money from this blog, I figure it would not hurt to try to monetize some of the work I have accomplished on this blog so far and into the future. One thing I plan on doing is to shed my Cable TV bill by getting an iView 3500 TV tuner (review) so I can get my local channels, and then sign up for Amazon Prime for all the pay TV Shows, Movies and Music. In addition, as time goes on I may get Netflix and Hulu, maybe Crackle and a few others.

Anyway, so I spent my hour a day doing this research, and another hour or so writing up this post, fulfilling Point 11 of the above list. As I find time, I will write up the other 11 points of the list and make the whole series available on the blog.

Check my blog today I realized I never posted this to the blog, it had remained in draft mode all this time. I have made some progress on some of the things I mentioned above, including purchasing the iView TV tuner converter box. I will write up a new post and comment on the device, soon, along with several more reviews of different devices that have come my way.

Health – Climate Comfort

Have you ever thought about your own comfort levels, physically, and if you are not comfortable with where you live, maybe moving to a part of your country or somewhere on this globe that might be more to your liking?

Well, the wife and I are extremely sensitive to extreme temperatures. The wife has a genetic condition that doesn’t allow her body to regulate heat very well because she cannot perspire sufficiently to stay cool, so when temperatures rise above 72ºF (22.2ºC) she starts struggling. Her comfort range realistically ends at 70ºF (21.1ºC). I personally feel fine until we get above 80ºF (26.7ºC), and start hating the heat above 85ºF (29.4ºC), but I can tolerate all the way to 92ºF (33.3ºC). However, I feel like I am getting less and less tolerant to heat, so I prefer to stay below 78ºF (25.6ºC).

Now, going in the other direction, the wife will wear shorts and sandals at temps below 50ºF (10ºC), and only wear a light coat and Capri-Style jeans at temps between 30ºF (-1.1ºC) and 50ºF (10ºC). She won’t start wearing sneakers or boots until temp reach below 30ºF (-1.1ºC)! However, this winter she has become less tolerant to colder temperatures, and anything below 40ºF (4.4ºC) seemed uncomfortable for her. My personal lower limit is 60ºF (15.6ºC), and I start putting on a light cotton knit sweater and jeans, anything below 50ºF (10ºC) I am wearing at least a light to medium weight jacket, along with the sweater, and if we dip below 40ºF (4.4ºC) I am wearing a decent medium to heavy coat, gloves, and something warmer than sneakers.

The consensus the wife and I have come to is that we need places to live where temperatures do not exceed 78ºF (25.6ºC) on the high side and don’t go below freezing very much in the cool season. This limits the choices we have, and I have been looking for places all around the planet that come close to our ideals.

The wife has been dreaming about moving to Anchorage, Alaska, and looking at the last 5 years of weather there, temperatures are between 6ºF (-14.4ºC) and 71ºF (21.7ºC), so the wife would feel fine there, but it would be too cold for me in the winter. The other issue is that you are pretty much cut off from civilization if modern air and ship travel get impacted by weather or natural disasters, and the other factor is that it is very expensive to live in Alaska, even in Anchorage.

Several years, before I married my current wife, I had read about a place in Ecuador named Vilcabamba, in the southern part of the country, that I read was a health nut’s paradise because the temperatures are between 68ºF (20ºC) and 89ºF (31.7ºC) all year long, and the land is so productive that you can grow anything all year long. I would be able to live there just fine, but the wife would struggle with the warm season.

About 3-4 years ago I came across an article about another place in Ecuador, Cotacachi, near Quito, that stays between 48ºF (8.9ºC) and 70ºF (21.1ºC), the perfect overlap range for both of use to be happy, and the cost of living is below that of the USA, and after the last currency default, the Ecuadorian government decided to adopt the US Dollar as their own currency, and being in a trade agreement with the USA, many American citizens decide to retire in Ecuador because of the lower cost of living.

There are warmer and colder areas than Cotacachi, and several of the larger cities in Ecuador offer high-tech jobs and many of the these same cities are progressive and modern and offer many conveniences like equivalent cities in North America and Europe, so there is employment opportunity for younger folks, too.

So, it seems to be the perfect place to move to, until today, when I read about a town in southern Chile, Punta Arenas. It is at the tip if South America, and was the port city of choice for any ship circumnavigating South America, to stop and resupply at, until the Panama Canal went into operation. Today the city is know for excellent tourism, wool, fish and beef production, and forestry products. Temperatures are between 29F and 60F, a little cool for me but I can live with it.

So, I think I would prefer to live in Cotacachi as my first choice, due to to the economic ties to the USA. And with so many American ExPats living there, I would imagine it would be the better choice. Also, since Ecuador is pushing hard to attract high-tech jobs, I think this is where we should go if we decide to become ExPats ourselves.

The other thought that had crossed our mind is to have several places we call home, and move with the seasons from Alaska, to Ecuador, to souther Chile, and maybe a place or two in between.

Health – Zeal of Life

About two weeks ago my older son invited my wife and I to a Zurvita Zeal of Life meetup at his place. I went there with the same attitude I have when dealing with MLM meetups. You know those Tupperware, Pampered Chef, Amway, Avon, and any other such MLM companies.

So I sat through the video and personal presentations, run by the sponsor since this was my son’s first meetup. We heard about the sponsors testimonials, as well as the effect the Zeal products have had on my son and his wife. We got to sample both the Wellness and protein drinks, both of which tasted fine to my surprise since I feel most protein drinks taste like they have liquid cardboard in them.

So, about 30-45 minutes later I walked out of there with 4 protein drinks and one Wellness sample bottle, free for me to try for a few days.

I was skeptical about the products, but I was urged to give them a try anyway, and I figured this didn’t cost me anything except for under an hour of my time, and I have always wondered how I would feel drinking a protein drink daily like my wife does after she awakes. So I had a protein drink and half the Wellness the next morning, and repeated the next day. Then the following two days I had the remaining two protein shakes, but I didn’t really notice that much difference those four days, other than that I appeared to have a little more energy.

On day five I noticed a major decline in my alertness and energy levels, and it got worse on day six, at which point I received four more bottles of the Zeal Wellness from my sons wife. I started back up by splitting one bottle over two days, and then a full bottle the following 3 days, and I was alert, energetic even more than on the protein drinks, and again, on day five without any Zeal I felt horrible.

So, despite being unemployed and having a very tight budget, I broke down yesterday and ordered a 30 day supply of the Zeal Wellness, as I have had a difficult time focusing on hunting for a new job, or just dealing with everyday chores. I have to say, that I can improve my well-being a little by taking conventional vitamins and supplements, but it doesn’t give me the energy or focus like the Wellness does.

So, as soon as I receive my 30 day supply, I will start documenting my progress of well being and once I find a job and can afford to do the 90 day weight loss and wellness challenge, I will do so, and document that as well.

Anyway, I felt like I needed to document my findings so far, while I could still recall the details and time frames of my experience with Zeal so far.

I shall report back as soon as I receive my supply and get going.
