VPN for Android and iOS

Posted in Android, Internet, iPhone, Technology with tags , , , on 2019/04/03 by rmolby

I just read an article on BetaNews talking about a new DNS and VPN service CloudFlare is introducing.

After reading through this article, and upon recommendation of a freind and co-worker, I installed it on my current phone, and even though I don’t have the VPN portion (I’m on a waiting list), just using the DNS resolver through CloudFlare is making things better for me already.

ISPs spy on your Internet traffic and sell the data. I’m #380193 to get 1.1.1.1 with Warp, a free app which will make the Internet on my phone faster and more private. You should get the app to reserve a place in line. #1dot1dot1dot1 https://one.one.one.one

I am currently #380193 inline to get the VPN service, but I will definitely continue to use the DNS resolver as it sped my internet access by about 5-10%.

If you are interested in adding this to your phone, go to your respective app store, type 1dot1dot1dot1 and the app should show up in the list.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 RETRO

Posted in Android, Technology with tags , , , , , , on 2019/01/25 by rmolby

In my previous post I reviewed the possibility to use a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (abbreviated as SGN4 fron now on) as a daily driver.

I think this is totally possible if you root and flash a ROM like LineageOS, however, it IS an old phone and it does show it at times.

So what had percolated in my mind since acquiring the SGN4 has been the severe lack of viable phones with removable batteries!

I was thinking, I really like how my wife’s Samsung Galaxy S9 (SGS9) performs, if we could just possibly get it in a package like the SGN4, then we would have something!

So, with this said, I setup up a petition to see how many people would be interested in buying a new phone that has the following parameters:

  • Exact same dimensions as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 so we can use already available protective cases
  • Exact same removable battery so we can use the plethora of available batteries
  • a modern HD display
  • a modern phone inside akin to the Note 9 or upcoming Note 10
  • USB-C
  • Wireless Charging & NFC back cover as a default
  • 256GB or better SD Card support
  • Dual SIM support for North America (shared with SD Card slot)
  • Support all AT&T and T-Mobile and International LTE Channels (like the current SGN9

I would call this phone the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 RETRO!

If you would be interested in buying such a phone, please head over to the petition so we can get enough votes to send this idea to Samsung!

Is using a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in 2019 possible?

Posted in Android, Technology with tags , , , , , on 2019/01/25 by rmolby

So, I have been hunting around for cell phones with removable batteries, because I want to have the option of swapping batteries when I don’t have a charged powerpack available, or be able to remove the battery to reset the phone!

Using GSMarena and PhoneScoop I have been searching high and low, and few viable phones are to be found!

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 on GSMarena

I keep coming up with one notable hit every time I search – the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 – unless I select LTE channels 66 and 71 as an option!

You might think – WAIT – the Note 4? A four to five year old phone? YUP!

So I decided to look to eBay to acquire a used but working SG Note 4, and eventually came across a deal where I could get an AT&T and a T-Mobile version for $100.

I sprang for the deal and was pleased with how well taken care of the phones were, and I got 4 hard shell cases and 6 batteries to boot!

So I went for the T-Mobile version first, and realized it had been rooted, something I wanted to do anyway, and it already had TWRP, and a recent version, so I jumped right in and flashed the phone with LineageOS with Android Oreo 8.1 (I had to use the unofficial release from xda-developers).

After a little trial and error and re-reading the instructions a few times I got the phone working perfectly and to my amazement, it runs Oreo quite well.

I installed a bunch of the apps I use, and eventually I also got a SpeedTalk Wireless SIM card, and signed up for the $9 plan that includes 500 Voice Minutes, Unlimited SMS, and 500MP Data!

It works great, and if the phone is used with care, it will run all day on a charge and I can do most things I want to do with it – AWESOME!!!

So, yes, it is possible to run on a former flagship model of a phone that is 4 to 5 years old if you can find a aftermarket ROM for it that brings it into the modern world.

Technology – Google restructuring

Posted in Android, Blogging, Business, Economy, Technology with tags , , on 2015/08/11 by rmolby

I just saw an article on tom’s HARDWARE stating that a new umbrella company, Alphabet, will “own” Google, and that all the smaller projects they have running under the Google umbrella will become independent subsidiaries under the new Alphabet group.

According to Larry Page, this is to enable Google to re-focus on it’s core mission, and spin off any successful projects as separate business units with their own budgets and CEOs.

I personally think this is a good idea. Google is a behemoth that must be difficult to manage, and probably impossible to audit. Too many small projects cluttering up the business. By breaking things up each business unit should be able to run meaner, and maybe leaner once it is running profitably.

Ramblings for 2012.11.26

Well, just a quick blurb about Cyber Monday.

I had been thinking these last few weeks about replacing my iPhone 3GS with a Samsung Galaxy S2 for $0.99 today on Cyber Monday, but by the time I was able to get logged into AT&T or Amazon, they were all gone.

I also visited the store I usually take my phone issues to and they didn’t have any decent deals.

This just proved to me that these so-called “deals or sales” are not really all that good a deal. I did find out that AT&T currently offers a deal where you get $100 off one phone if you get two Samsung Galaxy series phones at the same time, so I will try to talk my son into a Galaxy S3 instead of a iPhone 5.

We shall see how well that goes over, LOL.
