Linux Mint 19 MATE

Posted in Computer Software, Internet, Technology with tags , , , on 2018/12/27 by rmolby

So, last month I got ticket off at Windows 10 and installed Linux Mint 19 MATE onto one of my spare laptops, and I have not looked back.

Granted, I have a few things I will have to go back to my Windows 7 laptop for, but those things are few and far between.

With so much of our daily actions performed on the web or in the cloud, if you have Chrome or Firefox you are good to go, you really don’t need full blown apps anymore.

So, by using Free Open Source Software (FOSS) for my operating system in the form of Linux Mint 19 MATE, I incur no licensing cost. I also get 100% full control over when updates happen, which ones get installed, and when the reboot happen, if they are even needed.

I also don’t worry about stopping and rebooting if I find it necessary, because instead of having to wait forever for the computer to shut down all the services, then starting them back up, on average taking 10-15 minutes on my similarly equipped Windows 10 laptop, it takes a mere 1-2 minutes from stopping my work to being right back at it!

I have had ZERO loss of work, and nearly no down time with this setup. I then turned around and re-imaged the laptop after installing a mSATA (miniSATA) SSD drive, and now my restart time is down to about 50 seconds from when I issue the restart to when I am back on the desktop!!!

There is no contest, Linux Mint 19 runs circles around Windows 10, probably by a magnitude of 10! And I have found I can access NTFS file shares with zero issues. I can access my Drobo 5N2 ALMOST without any issues. All my online activity was already within either Firefox or Chrome, and that works flawlessly on Linux Mint.

As a matter of fact, accessing the same sites using Linux is at least twice as fast and snappy as the Windows 10 laptop, even after tweaking Windows 10 to the max!

So with all this said, and considering that I had made several attempts at switching to “beginners” version of other Linux distributions, and failing, I can say switching to Linux Mint 19 MATE has been easy and I don’t miss Windoze 10 at all!
